Digital Citizenship
Digital citizenship is such a big part of everyone's lives today and it influences everyone and how they do things. I believe that everyone living in today's world is either a digital immigrant or a digital native. It is getting harder and harder to function in todays society without using technology and knowing how to. Many children born in the last two decades are digital natives. They have grown up with technology being a large part of their lives and they understand it and most can easily adapt to new technology. Technology makes so many things much easier, especially when it comes to school and learning, but the teachers have to learn and adapt as well. Most teachers are probably digital immigrants and may not fully understand the impact technology has had on students growing up recently. Because of technology students now learn in different ways. And with all the technology we have there are so many more ways to teach things in extraordinary ways. Marc Prensky wrote an article called, "Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants", about how digital citizenship impacts our world today. He discusses how students learn differently now and many teachers aren't accepting of that. Kids now grow up playing video games, watching t.v., and using their cell phones. Prensky believes that teachers should use those things to their advantage and allow students to learn with them since that is what they have grown up using and doing.
Technology is constantly changing and improving. People have to find a way to keep up with it and adapt to the new ways of doing things using technology. It can be complicated because the people who are teaching were not exposed to technology the same way the students who are learning were. Not only teachers, but everyone has to find a way that fits both the style of digital immigrants and digital natives, along with those whom aren't either. Prensky also discusses in his article how he believes the brain can change and organize itself differently. He explains that students in school now think and learn differently than students twenty years ago. He states that things like learning through games and things of that sort may be better for a student today than being taught by a paper book. Digital citizenship is a big thing in today's society and people have to understand that.
Speech therapy has come such a long way because of new technology. I will use technology to the best of my ability and as much as I can with clients because of what it can help with and do. I will be excited to use things like an ipad, computer, other touchscreen things that will be to my clients advantage. I can use technology to keep the kids interested in what we are working on. For example, when using an ipad or an itouch I can download games and worksheets so that the kids will be learning but also having fun. Kids may feel like they are just playing a game when they are actually improving their speech. Sometimes kids may feel like 30-45 minutes of practicing speech is a long time and can be boring, but if they have other things to use and do different things with then it can help keep their attention instead of being a distraction. After reading, "The Benefits of New Technology", I realized how many different things you can do and that using new technology does work. I consider myself a digital native and I feel I have grown up in a very technological society. I have been exposed to technology my whole life and I am continuously having to adapt to new technology that comes along. I realize the benefits of using technology and I am excited to see what all I can use with my speech pathology practice.
