Sample Lesson
I have created a sample lesson plan to show the parents of my clients what a particular session may be like. I first used the Web 2.0 tool, bubbl.us to create a concept map to help me make my lesson plan. This helped me brainstorm what my clients need to already know, what they need to understand and what they need to learn from the standard for that session.
The standard for my lesson plan deals with identifying and sorting common words from within categories. During the session I will use the Web 2.0 tool, Quizlet, to make matching cards for my students to learn the definitions of words that need to be sorted. It will allow me to make cards that have pictures, for example an apple on one and a triangle on another, and then have a card with a definition that matches it. Once they have learned those, I will make new notecards that will then have the word of the certain category on it and then either a card with definitions or pictures that they will have to match with that category. Using the iPad to do this will help keep my clients attention and have them more interested in what they are doing. I will switch between using the iPad for putting words into categories as well as paper cards so it is not the same thing the whole time.
Using the concept map method was very helpful to me. It allowed me to walk through every part of the standard and lesson plan. When it came time to write out my lesson plan and what my clients needed to know, understand, and learn, having the concept map allowed me to do it quickly and efficiently because everything was right there. I chose to use Motivation from the Teacher Boot Camp because I will have clients one on one with me and I want them to always be motivated toward a goal of improving their speech. To help keep them motivated and undistracted I chose to use flashcards/matching cards on the iPad so they will be "having fun" as well as learning. They will know exactly how well they did after playing the game and I think that will help motivate them to keep trying to do better. Having a touchscreen that they can use and drag the cards across the screen with their finger will help them feel like they are in control and will also help them with their motor skills!
Below is a sample lesson plan that one of my clients might have for a session. I will always discuss the lesson plan with the parent/guardian first and then afterwards so they can know what is going on and if they choose, practice more at home.
